Find out about our most recent winner, Shiv Patel.

Shiv writes:

In July 2020, I received some tragic news that a much-loved member of Red Star FC, Matt Quigley, took his own life. Matt was truly a terrific bloke, the team’s absolute heart and soul, and a great friend also. As President, I knew that we had to do something drastic to change the way we approach mental health at the club. That’s why this year we’ve supported various charities, run mental health sessions, and been there for our teammates in what has been an especially tough period.

Although I am deeply humbled, proud and thankful to receive the Oliver Hare Altruism Award, this award is as much mine as it is the rest of the committee and team. We’ve all made a monumental effort to support our teammates’ mental health and hopefully we’ve started something where members of Red Star FC always feel fully supported and cared for.

I hope what we at Red Star achieved this year will have done Matt and Olly proud. We are greatly looking forward to running more events and supporting our teammates at UCL in the future.

UCL Oliver Hare Altruism Award

Olly spent three years studying History at UCL. The Oliver Hare Altruism Award has been set up in his name to recognise and reward the altruistic endeavours of UCL students. Previous winners have made a significant and positive impact through their volunteering and philanthropic ventures.

The award is presented in June every year at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London. It was set up by friends and staff at UCL in recognition of how compassionate and kind Olly was and how much he was loved by all who knew him. Students and staff can nominate those they feel would be worthy winners of the award and then a panel of trustees and invited guests decide the winner. There are often around 25 nominations every year.
